Ever since the Protocols of the Elders of Zion were forged by the Russian secret police in 1905, and US Industrialist Henry Ford popularized them in the Dearborn Independent, they have been a staple of anti-"Zionist" propaganda. Today you can find them at many anti-"Zionist" Web sites, and they are published and circulated in Arab countries as the absolute truth.

They are incorporated as factual in the charter of the Hamas, democratically elected by the Palestinian people to lead the fight against the 'Zionists." The Hamas is about to get legitimized by the EU apparently, so the Protocols are coming up in the world.

The document claims that a small group of Jews is plotting to control the world. The fable fits so well with absurd anti-"Zionist" myths about the sinister power of Jews that it is irresistible. Like all good folktales it is retold in many forms for different audiences. Supposedly, the Protocols are actually the secret resolutions of the Basle Zionist Congress in 1897.

National Geographic Magazine, generally not a big fan of 'Zionists' has discovered the popularity of the Protocols in the Arab world, much to its horror. Actually, the Protocols are favorite features in anti-'Zionist' Web sites around the world, and I have met real Western people who most earnestly believe that the documents are real.
